Apple’s New “Siri” Voice Assistant for the iPhone 4S
Posted on 2011-10-5
Finally, Apple has decided to put its acquisition of Siri to good use. Since acquiring Siri a year ago, Apple has not used the voice assistance technology much. However, Apple has been working diligently on adding the technology into iOS 5.
Siri’s technology first was used as an iOS app, which allowed users to make simple commands such as buying movie tickets or scheduling a reservation at a restaurant. However, with the improved processing power of the iPhone 4S, Apple can deeply embed the service into the iPhone 4S to make it more usable.
Today users were notified that the App will stop working on October 15th, when the iPhone 4S arrives. The app sent a message that said, “I’ve been replaced. The new Siri is even smarter and better looking than me, and waiting for you on the iPhone 4S.” It continued by saying, “I’ll be leaving for home October 15th. Until then…how can I help you?”
Apple has released information about what the new version of Siri will be able to do. In addition to the basic functions Siri has always provided, you can now receive general information about the weather, local businesses, and local traffic conditions.
Many Apple users are looking forward to the release of this service and rightfully so. It is going to make iPhone users lives much easier and will make driving much safer. Here is Apple’s official video introducing Siri:
Siri also also allows you to write messages by speaking. This feature will work with any application allowing you to type.
While you might think you will never use this feature, it could prove to be very useful while driving, or someone vision impaired who can now send and receive text messages. I’m sure some clever app developers already have some great idea’s for ways to use Siri.

Yes but Siri requires the dual core processor to function which the iPhone 4 does not have. All the current iOS devices will support iOS 5 but only the 4s and further models will support Siri.

Dude, this is going to be a much more advanced system that other phones will have to copy off of. Nothing so far has been this comprehensive. iPhone already had talk commands before “siri”, you were already able to do searches & various other things with voice including also the phone reading back to you for blind people…I’ll let that sink in…this new option is a comprehensive AI using a system that has never been used before for this specific purpose. do your research before you put your foot in your mouth. They didn’t copy anything. Suri was independently founded in 2007 with patents! Then Apple bought them in 2010 with plans to incorporate the “never-before-used-in-a-phone” technology in there phones in 2011. here is a link to the info if you want to have a clue what you are talking about!

Anyway, stop acting like a fanboy with your name and attitude and move on with your life. Anyway, I kid, keep posting because opinions are great even if they have no basis in reality.

The problem is that you get stuck with Apple if you buy an Iphone. otherwise, you will be spending money buying the same app you bought for in your iphone when you switch to Droid. If you buy a droid now then you have many options to select from later on.

Apple acquired this a year ago. The other company didn’t have the vision or the brains to do anything else with It. Apple took over, then researched it, tweaked it,& turned it into a utility that’s going to work better than anything like it. That’s what Apple does. All you whiners that want bigger screens, faster this, better that, more of this, go get it, cause that’s all you’ll get, well you’ll also get all the freeze ups, glitches, & malware. Apple just does it better & that’s why they sell more phones than anyone on Earth. Buy the damn phone, shut your pie hole & have a little knowledge on what your talking about.

October 6, 2011 at 9:01 pm
No, it has not, Android has basic functions, as did the iPhone 3Gs basic commands are in pretty much every smart phone their is now. Your Android can not set dates for meetings and arrange them around if times conflict with one another, your droid can not set an alarm for you if you ask it to. The company that Apple bought out revolutionized this technology, it wasn’t even meant for phones, it was meant for computers. It’s a level of AI that is patented and couldn’t be on your droid. Apple bought the company and redesigned the technology to work on the iPhone. But, because your on the Apple hater club, your going to convince yourself that your droid can do more then call someone you voice programed into your phone or send text messages via you speaking to it, but find yourself having to repeat it a lot. Try to have your phone set an alarm for you without touching it…….. Didn’t do it, did it. I’ve done the Android smart phone thing, its just a bulky phone that slows down after 5 months of use.

Wow, that is about as pointless a statement as I have read on here. It’s all about the operating system, production quality, & then overall hardware stats, & apple is competing amazingly where it counts. One of the best quality phone cameras ever made, arguably the most video playback time of any phone, & the most pixels per inch of any phone in existence. & the ios makes the most of all available hardware stats, maximizing speed & battery life.
I love a lot of the android based phones & the iPhone but you are obviously not an informed consumer with your rating of “stale”.
Keep posting though, that’s what this forum is for, even if you are just another angry troll!

Having this as one of the biggest selling features of the new iPhone, is a big disappointment. There was always “an app for that” and this would most likely not be a reason to spend all that money to upgrade to a 4S from a 4. What a joke.

Wow, that makes me very sad the way Siri responded.. Oh, I’m disappointed it wasn’t the iPhone 5, but I can understand a few of the reasons why that happened aside from the tsunami disaster in Japan. Although Apple did not have enough time to redesign the phone, at least they know their consumers’ anticipation and packed some of those iPhone 5 features into the 4S… if they hold out any longer, I bet they’d lose some market share to the Droid & phone running on Android OS.

Why are people complaining about the new iphone? To me it’s more than what anyone could need in a phone. It’s faster than ever and has the highest resolution screen of any phone on the market (including your precious droids). So there’s not a new design? Who the hell cares? If SIRI works as good as they advertise then that is an AWESOME new feature. All you people cursing apple and threatening to leave, what features were you looking for?? And I really don’t think the company is gonna shed tears if you switch to a different phone… they’ve got plenty of people that will be lining up for any phone they put out.

man, i would have to agree with you! & don’t forget that the camera has the best light metering and focal/photon reception of any phone! People that are into photography are going to freaking die for this phone. Oh and the video playback time on this phone is going to be better than any phone on the market as well…let me think, oh yeah, and even though it is not 4g(which hasn’t even been fully rolled out nation wide yet) it has the ability to use multiple cell towers at the same time with two antennas and will be twice as fast as 3g was without compromising the battery life like 4g-lte is known to do.
oh, & I have a 3gs that will still run the current ios updates. still an amazing phone that has become a new phone to me with every update, the ios is what makes apple iphones so amazing. there will always be something, 15% or more, faster out there trying to compete by numbers, but the ios takes better advantage of power/speed/graphics than other phones. Their prioritization of phone actions & activities(power/speed/graphics/overall processing) is second to none.
I still like the android operating system for what it is, & I don’t go to phone sites that run the android operating system & troll around complaining about how unreliable they are and how viruses can occur and user data can be hacked in an instant. Or state things like the fact that hospitals and government agencies have adopted the iPhone but are shying away from anything android based because of the security issues. yep, I’m not going to do that because I’m not a troll. Android is a really great operating system, but since I am already an iPhone user if I wanted the benefits of that type of thing I would just jailbreak my iPhone.

apple has been known to do this. This is what they did with the iPhone 3g. Once they got the bugs fixed with the 3g & had that model perfectly honed down & stable they rolled out the 3gs. that was faster and better in every way. the very same 3gs which I’ve had for 2 & half years & is still working great with the most up to date ios update (same currently updated ios as is being run by the iPhone 4 and soon to be 4s. I will get the 4s because I love the ios and this is the fastest and best item to run it on!

I have voice assist in the car and never use it
Jesse
October 6, 2011 at 9:21 pm
Because voice assist is a joke. I am sure you have to repeat yourself constantly, and why would you use it anyway, voice assist can’t give you reminders, can’t read or send text’s and emails, it can move around your meetings, according to your calendar, it can’t even talk back to you, just repeat what you say for a semi attempt at verification. People need to stop confusing Siri, with what we see in systems today, which is voice assist or voice commands. Siri doesn’t just repeat what you say or mimic understanding. It actually understands what you are asking for, and responds back in a matter that no other voice “anything” has ever done and currently does. It learns how you the individual talks in order to understand you even better. It is Actual Artificial Intelligence, not just programmed intelligence.

“Its the thought that counts”??? What is this an after school special for handicaps?
The significance of “5″ is that it signifies the next evolution of the products development. Simply put, “4S” represents the most modest level of capital investment required to remarket an existing product and ride the brand loyalty wave to $$$. Its akin to bringing out a crappy “New Cola” jsut so you can remarket “Coca-cola classic” and again, $$$.
I wanted “5″ AKA faster processor speeds than competition, more ram than competition, larger screen to make use of all that computing power… better than average. The 4S is simply a mid-market product with a new moniker to entice non-iphone owners and uncompromised profit margins to tap into emerging markets (now that initial development expenditures are paid off).
Jesse
October 6, 2011 at 9:53 pm
You said “Its akin to bringing out a crappy “New Cola” jsut so you can remarket “Coca-cola classic” and again, $$$.
I wanted “5″ AKA faster processor speeds than competition, more ram than competition, larger screen to make use of all that computing power… better than average.” First the coca cola comparison is contradicting to your argument. See, Coca Cola kept the same recipe and changed the packaging, people bought a new look, but same product. The iPhone 4s is rebuilt internally i.e different recipe, but kept the exterior looks the same i.e the packaging. Second you mentioned performance and wanting faster processing speeds then competition…. I thought it was common knowledge but, the iPhone 4s is faster, it has a dual core A5 processor, download speed are faster, almost twice as fast, it’s either on par with the competition or surpasses it. But the genius that is Apple is that it can do it longer in part to the bigger battery, they kept 3G and maximized its potential to the point it can operate at speeds of 4g phones but outlast them in the process. Did I mention that there’s an 8mp camera that shoots 1080p video?….. So, how is this not what you wanted again? would a different packaging have made the phone that much faster? Bigger screen would have been nice, but i don’t see how its really that relevant, because no other phone can come close in comparison to the PERFORMANCE of the iPhone’s Retina Display.

THANK YOU!! Someone else who makes sense other then “DAGUERREOTYPE-O-NEGATIVE”. The only thing that’s the same about the iPhone 4s is the style. The phone has a faster processor that is going to blow away any other smart phone out there, it has dual antennas for better reception where ever you are, even better battery, to extend life even with the faster production and power needed to operate the faster Dual Core A5 chip. The camera alone, on the iPhone is something you would pay $200-$500 for in itself. Do people know how much a 1080p Video camera costs?!! The Siri program in itself is revolutionary, although people will pretend their current smart phones can do more then just look up websites and send text messages. Siri is true Artificial Intelligence not just pre programmed intelligence.

DAGUERREOTYPE-O-NEGATIVE
October 8, 2011 at 3:50 pm
probably they will wait a full year from now. this is just mere speculation but from what I understand they waited for the release not because of inclement weather in China but rather because they wanted the 4s to come out for multiple service providers at the same time. Verizon got the iPhone 4 in the middle of the season, and they(apple) didn’t want to piss of the Verizon customers coming out with a new phone 6 months after Verizon got the iPhone 4.
So this new release date should be about the same next year. But if you wait a full year for the iPhone 5 you will probably want to wait yet another year for the iphons 5s. LOL.
I have the 3gs, and every 2 years when my plan is ready to upgrade my Wife & I get the newly upgraded “s” versions of the phone, works great for us.

I see what you mean. what has changed in the outer body is the antenna system and the camera. But what some people wanted was for the phone to become somewhat rounded again…that would be so impractical though because the design now (flat sides all around) makes it to where you can set it on a flat tabletop and record video, take pics, or facetime chat without having to hold the phone. rounded off sides would have it falling over like my 3gs. Really it comes down to whether you liked the iPhone 4 design in the first place; if you did like the iPhone 4 design then you will be happy the basic shape did not change, & if you didn’t like it then you are SOL.

Siri is entirely software-based; ergo there’s no reason for it to be restricted purely to the 4S. Hell, even the recognition and heavy processing is done in the cloud, by the sound of it, so it’s not as if they can claim it requires the upgraded processor.

Android mimicks them and comes close but no cigar. But until that day that sends you running, have fun with your virus ridden droids!

Lol Justin, I do think that both phones have their positive & negative points but I must say that was a good “fanboy busting rant.” You and Jesse have made me laugh the hardest.

of course, it is just a matter of cracking the new operating system for ios5. Hackers will find a way no problem!

It’s funny that when I read all comments here was like made by elementary and kids leaving in their moms basement…
I had the iPhone (original), 3G, 3GS then iPhone 4 – all of it was jail broken…
I’m typing now in my iPad 2 because my iMac is tired for the whole day of work, then my MacBook pro left in my Audi, and watching now a movie using an apple tv…
When my cousin who own 3 cellphone stores introduced Tmobile NEXUS S, I said its plasticky and cheap looking… He said, if you put a good case it will be better. He sell and jailbreak iPhone in all his stores but loves so much the NEXUS series phones.
One day he showed to me the dedicated capacitive button for google voice recognition/search and I was amazed of it can do, that’s out of the box experience – no hacking, rooting or jailbreaking.
My last iPhone-iPhone 4 had been jail broken and had installous. He put the best of the best personalization and applications but still if you will compare to his NEXUS S it pales in comparison in what it can do. Just hit the dedicated capacitive button for google voice recognition/search and tell to navigate me to disneyland and after you will say it, NEXUS S will do the rest – it will go to the super advance google maps that they always update 2-3 times per month.
If theses itards/isheep keep on glorifying apple even they NEVER INVENTED ANYTHING In their iPhone from the original till the latest one from hardware to software. They will STEAL, COPY & buy small tech. Company and get the credit and shout to the world IT’S FIRST AND MAGICAL…
APPLE ALWAYS LIE…
SIRI WAS NEVER INVENTED BY APPLE, THEY BOUGHT IT FOR $200 MILLION…
I was once an isheep

Also, a software engineer of mine told me that even in 5 years, APPLE & AMAZON combine – they cannot reach the clouds capability of GOOGLE as they have keep on adding more even they have millions of server now…
GOOGLE CLOUDS is more bigger than any company in the world as they have the largest server farm till 2020 if they will stop making now but if they will keep on building more, NO ONE CAN REACH their server population.
How about SAMSUNG WILL PULL OUT ALL THEIR ADVANCE AND GREAT TECHNOLOGY PARTS IN ALL APPLE PRODUCTS AND GOOGLE WILL TAKE OUT ALL THEIR PRODUCTS IN APPLE ECOSYSTEM FROM YOUTUBE,GMAIL, GOOGLE SEARCH AND THOUSAND MORE PEOPLE DON’T KNOW… WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO APPLE,
THEY WILL SINK LIKE A TITANIC…
