iOS 5 Beta Hints at 4G LTE Support in iPhone 5 and iPad 3
Posted on 2011-8-25
Will 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) support be coming in Apple’s next-generation iPhone and iPad devices? While digging through the files in the recently-released sixth beta of Apple’s upcoming iOS 5 mobile operating system, some enterprising users have found hints that suggest that LTE support may be arriving to Apple’s devices soon.
Many have speculated that the iPhone 5 will launch with LTE support, as there are already a few Android handsets and tablets on the market that support LTE and Apple generally tries to lead and not follow with its new iPhone handsets. With Apple’s two main carrier partners AT&T and Verizon currently rolling out 4G LTE network coverage as fast as possible, users would likely flock to the iPhone 5 in droves if LTE support was an included feature. Verizon’s network is far more complete than AT&T’s, but it’s expected that the two companies will feature similar LTE coverage by next year.
Although the iPhone 5 is all but confirmed to be launching sometime in September or early October, Apple has yet to even confirm the existence of the device. Nothing is known about what the next-generation iPhone handset will deliver in terms of upgraded hardware or features; whether or not LTE had even been considered by Apple was unknown until the discovery of LTE settings in iOS 5 Beta 6.
As for the iPad 3, little is known about the device other than that it is likely to be released sometime in early 2012. With the launch of the next iPad still many months away, it’s almost certain that an LTE-capable version will be offered, as the major North American carriers will have their LTE networks fully rolled out by next spring. Another sign that LTE may be coming to the iPad is the recent speculation that Apple is set to allow its carrier partners to subsidize the cost of the iPad 3, similar to how the iPhone is subsidized. Customers will be considerably more willing to sign a one or two-year LTE data plan contract if they are able to save a few hundred dollars on the purchase price of their new iPad tablet.
Of course, it’s possible that the appearance of LTE settings in the recent iOS beta were simply included to aid Apple and its developer base in their testing. This is a common practice for mobile operating system developers, which generally have numerous prototype handsets in the field being tested at all times.
With Apple CEO Steve Jobs stepping down from his position today, we’re unlikely to hear much more about the iPhone 5, the iPad 3 or the possibility of 4G LTE support for at least a week or two. By then, we’ll be in to September and likely close to Apple’s fall event, where the iPhone 5 is expected to be announced and demoed. Until then, sit tight and keep your fingers crossed that Apple does decide to include support for the incredibly fast 4G LTE networks in the upcoming iPhone 5 handset.

This would be a wonderful thing – can’t wait for the demo and the “Offical” release date.

im not here to complain, but why would one need LTE so badly? I rarly have to wait for data to load on the 3G network. YouTube loads in like 7 seconds… and thats on the iphone 3GS. I just hope battery life is not reduced because of this.

Didn’t we read in an earlier article that Apple said no 4G until the 6th gen iPhone? Or was that just more speculation?

Yes, AT&T made this comment, however, if the hint for the support for LTE is there then Apple must be on to something with the battery longevity issue with 4G. They wouldn’t put something on their products unless they have reasonable certainty that it will function as advertised.

Why are people so pumped about iPhone and LTE? Your pages will load instead of 7 seconds, in 4 seconds. Also, LTE will drain the battery faster. So I dot understand the need of 4G on an iPhone yet.

You are misunderstanding the technology behind LTE. You are talking about the potential for speeds from the current 4G (3mbps – 11mbps) to possibly exceed 100 mbps, so your premonition of loading times is waaaay off. I would suggest some sites and articles that explain the technology for you, but I am not here to educate anyone, only to tell you to look it up for yourself, just as I have.

I highly doubt that Apple would sacrifice battery life for 4G; just look at the iPad 2, “all with the same 10 hours of battery life”.

That all depends on the efficiency of the LTE module.

i disagree. my droid x does not need 4G. that thing is fast on 3G. however 3 people i am with on a regular basis have iphone 4 and its just downright slow on 3G. at least compared to what im used to. yes all new high end smartphones need 4G.

Ok, I get that faster = better.
Is there atleast an option to turn off 4G as use 3G instead?

i teather my thunderbolt to my tv, and stream 1080P movies with 5.1 surround through the built in netflix ap on my TV. Granted I live in a 4g city (washington dc). No buffering time needed. Try doing that with 3g. Verizon gave unlimited data away in the begining, and I am gradfathered in. I root (jailbroke) to have the feature of hotspot unlocked.

This will be awesome for the Iphone to have. Battery life will always be an issue till a new battery technology is found or same technology only find a way to go smaller and have the same charge. But I have extremely little knowlege in batteries, only know that batteries are far behind the times in technology and its not progressing as fast as electronics they are coming in. So everybody even apple is going to have problems. Can find a way to make 4G more energy efficient, could solve the problem if its possible. For apple to lead the way like this article claims they do (only in sales I think not tech) 4G I think is a must specially if its supposed to be fully rolled out early 2012 and this release being so late.

It’s exciting to see this in development since many people were hoping for 4g capabilities in the iPhone 4, but I doubt it’ll be released with this device (at least not LTE). I know the article says Apple likes to be a leader rather than a follower but I disagree. They were slow to adopt 3G, and basic functions like cut and paste, and they still haven’t allowed a file system or flash support. I do disagree with the guy who isn’t excited about LTE though. LTE will not only increase data transfer drastically (and start to make video calling more practical), but will allow greater reception within buildings, and for people who work near the middle of large buildings, this is exciting! I’m always welcoming to the advances in technology, but by all means, feel free to wait 7 seconds for a web site to load for the rest of your life if it pleases you =)
AT&T Guy
August 27, 2011 at 3:16 am
Actually, in reality they do have a file system, just a proprietary one that is incompatible with every other system out there besides their own. Which I think they should change, as they should have when they came up with OSX. As far as flash, that was a vulnerability issue that the developers behind Safari were unwilling to take and that rule also stands to this day. We hope that with the advent of creating pages in HTML5 using more functions from jQuery and php rather than flash, will make content 100% visible on nearly every platform… Keeping fingers crossed over here…
Brant
September 7, 2011 at 4:20 pm
Agreed. There are certain things that apple could with their file systems. As far as flash goes….get rid of it. With web development flash is a battery sucking, browser slowing monster that, as you stated, needs to be done away with with jquery, php, html5 and css3. Web standards. Both apple and microsoft have agreed on that one thing. The iPhone and iPad can surf the web longer due to the fact that they don’t accept flash based sites or animations.

The comment that by next year at@t will have similar coverage as VZW is way off. At@t is at least 2 years behind in rolling out LTE. vzw will have almost the entire 3g area covered with LTE by the end of 2012 and at@t will at best have 30 major markets.

You sir are wrong about where AT&T is with regard to LTE, in fact, you will find that once LTE is “Turned On” in specific areas it will function a lot better than Verizon. You see, AT&T has something that Verizon doesn’t… it is called HSPA+ with Enhanced Backhaul. This allows the device to have little to no latency while in or near a LTE service area. Currently, if you are on Verizon and you are using a LTE capable device, and you are in a LTE area but wander just to its outer limits or a virtual dead zone due to structure/buildings, your signal will drop tremendously. This will not occur with AT&T.
For your other part, it is obvious you are not an AT&T customer or you would probably be looking to see what their status is to plan for your next device. AT&T and Verizon have publicly stated that their LTE will not be near complete until 2013. This is not something I or any other writer made up. It is a contingency plan for both companies. They spend money when they have to, not because they are trying to beef everything up. When the smartphone or portable device technologies change, so do all of the supporting technologies. LTE is new, and originally was not intended for smartphones, but you will see, by this time next year AT&T and Verizon will have nearly the same LTE coverage.
My last comment goes just for the hell of it. AT&T is #1 out there, you may disagree because of crappy equipment you have had, poor service, whatever, but remember when it comes down to it AT&T invented the telecommunications industry when they were known as the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. Verizon Communications began as a “baby bell” due to the AT&T break-up in 1983 known as Bell Atlantic – had it not been for some stupid anti-trust judgement against AT&T Verizon would not exist. Also – since the break-up, AT&T has been cleaning house and buying up all the competition once again to keep putting themselves right back on top. In the end it will be the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. (Once known as Southern Bell Communications – You remembering this story now?)
Phone Guy
August 31, 2011 at 3:39 pm
Actually – the new at&t (notice lower case since they are not permitted to use AT&T) is nothing more than the reconstitution of “Baby Bells” as well. SBC, PacBell and Bellsouth, but the wireless driver is actually more Cingular in nature which was never part of the Bell system. The technology arm of the former AT&T (Ma Bell) was AT&T Bell Labs was spun off as well and became Bell Core (also responsible for the Unix OS).
AT&T Guy
September 1, 2011 at 12:19 am
You are correct sir about the reconstitution, however, what I was referring to was the management infrastructure of the original at&t (pre 1983). They remained with Southern Bell Communications, which is why they retained rights to the name at&t. the name at&t has passed hands too many times to mention here, but if you read the complete history of the company you will see it has come full circle. Whether it had been part of Lucent, MediaOne, NCR, TCI, Ameritech, etc. Bell Atlantic is the only one that went in a totally separate direction.

Bottom line, Verizon has the better network. Who cares about 1877 or how Bell Atlantic Mobile became Verizon 12 years ago?

Wrong! Apple wanted to give the iphone to Verizon. They had some dispute about profit. So, Apple went to at&t. Apple would have made more money if they had agreed with Verizon. Now, Apple is a CASH COW!

At this point is it best to wait until the iphone5 comes out, which is speculated at the end of this year? Or is the iphone4 the best option since AT&T is not fully 4G yet? And it is questionable if TLE will come with iphone5.

tat2 yoiuu sound like a very dummed down/trained monkey.
VZW wanted the technology beacause their network was larger and much more compatible with the iphone. (give a little tweaking that is) VZW is the one that is 2 years or so AHEAD of the competition…..
AT&T Guy
August 29, 2011 at 8:12 pm
Wrong – you want numbers? I will be more than happy to get them for you. Subscribers, probably, I don’t have that number readily available. Verizon’s network is not larger than AT&T – they are actually quite the same ddepending on how you quantify it. Coverage – AT&T, Subscribers – I’ll say Verizon, there are many others, and you need to be specific. Verizon is not 2 years ahead, they just turned on a technology that isn’t quite ready yet, and AT&T is turning theirs on now. Read my other post, as I am not just an AT&T customer, but knowledgeable of the entier Bell Telephone History, which includes Verizon.

August 29, 2011 at 11:39 pm
And one other thing, you have it wrong and it just sounds idiotic. Your wording has you saying that they design the telecommunications hardware around the smartphones. Doesn’t that sound the least bit strange to you? What are you? Some telecommunications Nazi?
MM
August 30, 2011 at 9:25 pm
I will have to agree with AT&T Guy. VZW is nowhere near 2 years ahead of ATT. VZW decided to turn on their LTE ahead of ATT without fixing all the bugs. I am a contractor for ATT and I have been installing LTE equipment for a very long time. ATT has LTE equipment in all large cities and TEST their product before they launch it Unlike VZW which just launched a few months ago and will probably have to revisit each cell site to troubleshoot their problems. Most major markets are already test driving LTE to see its performance. Once it is rolled out to the public then you will see VZW sink. VZW rolled out ahead of ATT just so they can sell the public more phones before anybody else could.

If I remeber right it wasn’t verizon that wanted the iphone it apple that wanted to go to verizon (so they can sell more phones because verizon is a larger market). Verizon didn’t want the iphone because of all the restrictions apple wanted put on it (though I could be wrong. This information did come from two different sources one being a verizon cust. service rep and the other a sales rep). Att is years ahead of cricket maybe but past that nobody else. The only thing att has over sprint is the coverage as far as 4g goes att’s 4g is more like 3g+ for now (it will change but other companies like sprint and verizon are already using what will be true 4g service). So att is not even close to years ahead of anybody. Prices are same as verizon (more expensive than other cell phone companies) and has worse coverage than verizon (in arizona anyway. I’m from az and I can get service almost anywere literally. Only places I couldn’t get it was when I dropped into a canyon). So again fail to see where att is years ahead.

First, Apple chose AT&T for its stability and reputation. When the 3G iPhone came out, AT&T sold more of the phones presale in 6 weeks than Verizon has sold since even getting the contract. This pattern continues as you can google the quarterly sales figures and you will see that AT&T has not only sold more iPhones than Vz, but in sales, period. Also, you can also find that AT&T made $8 billion profit last year… a claim that Verizon cannot make.
Oh boy, where to begin on your data for speeds and coverage. Sprint shouldn’t even be in this conversation since they can’t even own their own equipment. They lease towers from who other than…? Yup, you guessed it, AT&T. Which includes their hard lines at $53 a piece. You can search this information if you like, but you will find it to be true, so save the keystrokes. Each company has to boast its dominance and wave their hypothetical dick out to has the biggest because it draws revenue, IT DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE! I would truly welcome you to respond, citing your sources, as I can cite mine.
Let’s talk about speed for a moment. First, you are only as fast as your slowest component. That being said, take a serious look into your device before you decide what speed you think you are getting. Second, Sprint has something called WiMax, which is the wireless backhaul behind Sprint’s CDMA network which is supposed to deliver up to 128Mbps/56Mbps. However, check this link out: SURPRISE!
As far as AT&T speeds go, you are uninformed about what they are doing. AT&T has millions of satisfied customers who are practicing some delayed gratification, as they know they will see the speeds like everyone else. Some areas already do: Houston, San Antonio, Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta. Read Me
Aside from some of that guys opinion, he’s pretty much right on with what is really going on here. The Chicago market for AT&T’s LTE tested at 13Mbps/2Mbps. So customers in AT&T’s service areas should see the benefits just as Verizon customers see the benefits in their service areas. You happen to be in an area that must have not been to the liking of either Verizon or AT&T, as that would explain why you get no service. I looked at their respective service maps and found that they really don’t like parts of Az. Tests done back in May 2011 showed that AT&T’s version of LTE ran at 28.87Mbps down while Verizon only ran 5-12Mbps. Only time will tell.
Now, as for the years ahead comment. AT&T sets the standards in telecommunications. They created the industry. They have always been here and will be here long after Sprint and Verizon go the way of Ameritech, GTE, and all the other baby bells.
Rapid
August 31, 2011 at 1:23 pm
Hey KNOW IT ALL, Apple chose AT&T becuase AT&T offered them the best financial deal. AT&T and Verizon both wanted the Iphone but AT&T was able to negotiate a more aggressive deal and it took at least 2 years before AT&T realized net income from the contract.
Ken
September 13, 2011 at 7:32 pm
WRONG AT&T Guy. Apple went to Verizon first. They were fighting over money. Apple knew that they would make more money dealing with Verizon.
AT&T Guy
August 30, 2011 at 1:25 am
I don’t even know where to begin with your comment.
First, did you know that Sprint leases access to towers and hardlines for phones?
Yup, they sure do. Prices are roughly $53.00 per line, and they have to pay that.
Do you know from whom they lease these lines? Yup, AT&T!
The iPhone:
They chose AT&T, and they came to a contractual agreement which serviced the 2,3,3GS. Their reasoning was found not to be wrong. To this day, AT&T pre-sold more 3G iPhones in 6 weeks than Verizon has sold to this day. In fact, each quarter AT&T has still sold more iPhones than Verizon. Also, AT&T boasts $8 Billion in profit last year. A claim that Verizon cannot make, though they say they have more subscribers. You referred to Verizon having a larger market share. Larger market share of what? Overall, yes, no argument there from me, but that will change soon, and AT&T will be #1 again. READ ME
If you noticed in the article that it talked about Verizon following AT&T, how many times did he say it? That has been going on since Verizon’s incarnation. Whatever AT&T does, they do. AT&T is the leader in all aspects of telecommunications except the number of customers, and as I said before, that is about to change. When AT&T completes its LTE (READ ME), it will dominate and then will take more customers from Verizon, especially since AT&T always has something up their sleeve…most recently, think about how the iPhone impacted everything and no one saw it coming. It will happen again.
As far as your ability to get service wherever you are from in AZ, as I am familiar I grew up in Phoenix and Yuma, can be blamed on the fact AT&T does have minimal satisfactory coverage over the state, but over the highways and the major cities looked fine on the map. Verizon’s coverage of the same area resulted in slightly better coverage but vague to read it. Sprint had the best.
dwardo
August 31, 2011 at 12:32 am
verizon has a larger 3g map, it has an lte map, which att does not even have yet. the iphone is probably coming to sprint anyway. apple wants everyone to be able to have it. verizons 3g may be a little slower, but its available in WAY more places.the reason att has sold so many more iphones in the beginning than verizon has at all, is because it was the beginning of the phone! the hype was so large and everyone wanted one. just like how the ipad 2 was so hard to get until last month. its all about the hype. everybody was like OMG IPHONE when att got it and everyone bought it. when verizon got it, it was a quick surprise announcement and everyone on both att and verizon are all stuck in contracts. how many customers do u think had an upgrade available the week it came to verizon? ur a moron for not thinking that. idc how many “figures” and numbers and statistics u have about att. verizon has a much better quality network. if you plan on not being in the USA a lot, then obviously go att. its a gsm network. and your babble about dropping service at the end of a 4g area? bullshit. do you own a 4g lte phone? no cuz ur an ATT fag. i own a thunderbolt, and im not a moron so i can manage a battery. my signal is great and never just drops at the edge of a 4g network. it will switch out to 3g before it has no service. I also have the ability to manually switch what network I want, even if I want 1X only. can your beloved att iphones do anything of that sort? no. you have to stick with att’s shit 3g network. yeah its a little speedy for 3g, but it sucks in the regional department. and hspa+ is bullshit. its a temporary souped up 3g network until their lte network comes out. their merge with t mobile will complete the removal of hspa+ with nobody else operating on it. it is garbage, and should never be backed up by any sort of positive comments. saying that atts lte will not drop out because of their hspa+ network is a load of poo. 1. it doesnt happen anyway, the phones will switch to 3g first, and 2. the phones with lte wont have hspa+ service in them. stop sucking att’s balls and get over the fact that they are not superior. vzw will soon reign over all and jizz all over att.

It does not matter if it is AT&T or Verizon. They will each have problems in certain areas of the country. I live in the country and AT&T will pick up at my house but Verizon will not. If I drive about 2-3 miles from my house further into the country Verizon will pick-up but AT&T will not. That is just how it is. My preference is for AT&T but to each his own that is why there are difference companies out there for everyone to pick what they like.

August 30, 2011 at 9:42 pm
That is exactly it. That comparison is the only one you will see. With the exception of a few metropolitan markets (New York, e.g.) Verizon and AT&T purposely have certain areas targeted where they will be dominate. So, it is always a good idea to know what provider has your area, typically, if you reside in the Eastern US, Verizon may be your best bet, it just depends because that is where they are based, and that is where they were born. Southern states & the mid-west has historically been AT&T. The market to watch right now is Chicago – LTE just went up for AT&T there and it’s u/d speeds were faster than Verizon’s LTE. I may be part of AT&T, but I am not a salesman, I only tell people things to inform them to make a conscious decision based on factual data and not the propaganda they see on TV or hear from their friends… Do your research before you get a smartphone because they are only getting more expensive and are now becoming an investment.

Get your facts straight on LTE speeds, AT&T is tested speeds (no subscribers) VZ is actual speeds with subscribers, as far as LTE goes we will soon see the day when any phone with a LTE radio chip will work on any network (just like the rest of the world is doing) a radio chip in the 700mhz (Ericsson and Lucent say they can filter it out) just needs to be directed to the right sim card, that will actually show who has a better network then. the reason VZ has better service is that CDMA has a soft hand off when it comes to traveling and hitting different cell site (continuously taking to serveral cells at a time) and GSM/UMTS has a hard hand off which means it will talk only to the next cell and then drop to communicate to the next cell and if any interference, weak signal is presence it will drop the call.

Verizon is not bigger, nor does it even have more service. Look at any third party coverage map and you will actually see that without all of the crap the wireless companies put up, AT&T has more service, stronger signals, faster speeds, and better overall service. AT&T is way better than Verizon and that is not just my opinion that is based off of facts, not little stories that Verizon feeds you to keep you happy with your shit service

3G is enough for me, it loads youtube in 5sec. , i’m not

Question to AT&T guy, I’m in “the sticks” our AT&T coverage in this area is crap (not an insult, just a fact) and Verizon’s is amazing. https://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=NEWREQUEST&zip=30461&city=Statesboro&state=GA and http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/#?type=voice&lat=32.43995466676523&lon=-81.71424778204738&sci=6
I am in Georgia and I trust you can see the difference. I would love it if you would tell me that AT&T’s 4G LTE will cover MORE than what is even considered “Moderate” in these areas.

I had an iPhone 3G, at&t. I loved it. I switched to MetroPCS for the last year and a half because it’s so damn cheap. Unlimited everything on a “4G” network for $50/month. Fan-fucking-tastic.
I was going to get an iPhone4 but I didn’t end up getting one. I’m looking to buy whatever the “best” smartphone on the market is late October. Hopefully the iPhone5 will have been out for a week or more. From what I have read on the iPhone 4, Verizon’s version was crap compared to the at&t 4. Verizon’s coverage isn’t shit over at&t or Sprint in my markets. Florida and Massachusetts.
I’m not going to say I’m content with ANY carrier’s 3G or 3G+ or whatever, but if the only thing Verizon has is supposed greater speeds NOW than Sprint or at&t, that is not going to sell me what with me hearing that their phones are shit, especially their current and upcoming iPhone.
I’m satisfied with at&t. I feel that they will inevitably go LTE and that will quite possibly blow Verizon out the water.
Right now about my ONLY issue with at&t is that they do not offer unlimited data. Someone told me that one minute of Youtube video on an iPhone4 can use up to 60MB of data. So based on that, in two hours of videos you will have used up all your monthly data (2048MB), been charged $10 for another 1024MB of data, gone through that and gone through around another $20 of data on top of that. That’s fucked up and doesn’t make any sense at all.
I do not know about Verizon, but Sprint offers unlimited data. Without costing anymore for the equivalent at&t plan.
My mother has gotten a new iPhone every year since the 2G and apparently gets unlimited data on her iPhone4 because of this. I have only had a 3G and for only two years…

I have a question for anyone that might know. Is there any information out about the new iphone having a screen around the size of the new HTC phones? im almost to the point of switching to a bigger screen phone, seeing as im a med student, it would be easier to read on and saving me the money from buying an ipad. please someone help me with this life changing question.

” Apple generally tries to lead and not follow with its new iPhone handsets. “-quote from paragraph 1 in the above article……
HAHAHAH, what a joke!! Apple is always a generation or even two behind the curve with ALL of its phone releases. I admit its design and style is generally leading, but the actual function has NEVER been a front runner. Take front facing cameras for example. Just about every POS phone has had one forever. Apple added it with the Iphone 4, and it is only a VGA resolution. JOKE! How about the rear camera. IPHONE 4 boasts a 5 megapixel res. That is VERY low in the smartphone market.

I don’t care about LTE, or even talk and surf at the same time nearly as much as I used to.
Bye bye AT&T. 3rd consecutive weekend I am out of town. Third consecutive weekend I need my phone. 3rd consecutive weekend I have no signal on my 3GS. Third consecutive weekend my wife’s iPhone 4 has no signal.
My friend, right next to me has full bars on his iPhone 4 from Verizon. I had to borrow his to make a call. Go ahead fanboys. Say what u want. AT&T SUX

I am sick of dropping calls bi weekly at least. My wife has slightly better luck with her 4, but considering my previous experience over several years with Verizon, there simply is no reason to be the but of every joke your Verizon friends tell.
Kinda tough to continually blame their phones for the drops.
It would be comical if it wasn’t so irritating.
One last rant to AT&T fanboys. Look at you. You are defending a phone company. A phone company that you do not own. Really? Time to figure out where it (maybe your life, I don’t know) went wrong. I would love o read the replies but I will be too busy smashing my AT&T piece of sh* into crumbs

For what it’s worth, here in Australia 4g was just released officially by our primary comms supplier and when I pressed them on the phone about it the operator slipped and mentioned iPhone 5 will not be supporting 4g. This is only here say I know but it came from the biggest in our country.
